Grade II C19th The Castle Folly

Brief:

  • To develop a phased repair strategy for the conservation of the folly
  • To ensure its long-term survival for future generations as a picturesque folly within the estate grounds

Survey & Condition:

  • Isolated ruined folly constructed of ironstone/orange sandstone quoins and flint infill
  • Encroachment of nearby trees, roots and ivy penetration
  • One tower left standing with collapsed hidden roof behind parapets
  • Other tower reduced considerably and starting to collapse rapidly to south facing elevation
  • Central arch in good condition but crenellations above beginning to decay & collapse
  • Localised decay/ spalling of sandstone and flint infill.

Schedule of Repairs:

  • Removal of nearby trees and all organic growth within a 2 meter radius
  • Localised replacement of decayed sandstone quoins using matching sandstone
  • Localised replacement of spalling flints using matching flints
  • Localised repointing of open joints where required using matching lime mortars
  • Consolidation of top of decayed tower and rebuild collapsed quoins and flint infill matching the existing
  • Consolidation and rebuilding of crenellations
  • Rebuilding of collapsed hidden timber roof to tall tower, leadwork & roof covering.
